WiMAX (Worldwide interoperability of Microwave access) is a global telecommunications standard that has been specifically designed to provide efficient low cost wireless broadband connectivity. Unlike some other wireless technologies, it can support large numbers of simultaneous users and multiple different applications in the same geographic area.

It is backed by some of the biggest names in telecommunications and computing such as Intel, Samsung, Cisco etc. and, although a new technology, it is already widely proven across the globe.

In the USA Clearwire is investing many billions of dollars in a WiMAX network to provide mobile broadband across entire towns & cities throughout the country whilst other significant networks are being deployed in Japan, Malaysia, India and Russia.

WiMAX is a proven, cost-effective 4th generation wireless technology that is available today. It is supported by an established global ecosystem with network and terminal manufacturers certifying interoperability which ensures a wide choice of customer devices supporting almost limitless applications.

The WiMAX Forum is an industry led organisation established to certify products based on the standard(s) it defines. Its board members include Alcatel Lucent, Cisco, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung. The Forum also has responsibility for the ongoing development of the standard safeguarding its worldwide interoperability. Future revisions to WiMAX will further boost connection speeds and ensure WiMAX is a technology standard that is here to stay.
