With increasing traffic volumes, attracting people onto public transport has become essential to support transport and environmental objectives. Making the journey more pleasurable and safer is one way to tempt people out of their cars and onto public transport.

A city-wide WiMAX network can offer both real-time mobile CCTV and passenger internet access on buses, trains or trams in support of these aims whilst also carrying data for new or existing real-time passenger information, vehicle telematics and traffic management systems.

In-vehicle internet is already being used as a competitive differentiator in the UK with various passenger carrying companies offering free or included Internet to their customers. Unfortunately existing 3G mobile network technology does not easily support data prioritisation for the CCTV application over other uses when it is required i.e. on activation. 3G also struggles to offer the capacity required, within a confined space, for the number of passengers wishing to use the Internet when travelling or commuting.
